Melissa Taylor has over fifteen years’ experience in the social service sector.
She holds a Bachelor and Masters of Social Work degrees from Ryerson University. She works in the private sector as psychotherapist and Anti-Racism facilitator, and as a trauma informed therapist in health sector for gendered violence. She specializes in generational trauma with a strong focus on Anit-Racism and Anti-Oppressive practice. Her work is collaborative and person center, and truly believes people are the expert of their own lives.
Black advocacy within the Medical Industrial Complex
Medical industrial complex has a long history of objectivity; codify white supremacy. Objectivity ignores race; sexual orientation; poverty, and other forms of oppression. When doctors are trained to ignore social constructs of oppression, patients voices are often ignore; which results in misdiagnosis or lack of treatment. In this talk, I will explore how to be assertive and data oriented: what key words to use when you are advocating for your rights in medical institutions.
